Cigar customers know that when purchasing cigars, they find that many of them are “wearing” cellophane on their bodies. However, after purchasing them and storing them for a long time, the original cellophane will turn brown.
Some cigar enthusiasts leave messages in the comment section asking, should we keep cellophane when storing cigars? Actually, do you know that this is not related to the quality of cigars, and this layer of cellophane is not made of plastic.
So, what material is cellophane made of? Why do we need to keep cellophane when making cigars? What are the advantages and disadvantages of retaining cellophane when storing cigars? Following the editor’s footsteps, let’s have a detailed understanding together.
Source of cellophane
In 1908, Swiss chemist Jacques Brandenberg invented a method for making transparent packaging materials. After witnessing table wine sprinkled on tablecloths in a restaurant, he inspired his idea of making waterproof coatings. Finally, in 1912, this invention was named “cellophane”, which is a combination of the words “cellulose” and “transparent”, meaning “clear and transparent”.
Due to its safe and transparent properties, many cigar manufacturers have chosen it as their packaging for cigars. Prior to this, most cigar manufacturers used tin foil or kraft paper to package their cigars.
Advantages and disadvantages of cellophane
1. Isolation protection function
After the cigar is made, cellophane can provide relatively good protection for the cigar in the short term. During transportation, due to the isolation of cellophane, the probability of mutual damage during transportation is reduced, and it also has a certain moisturizing effect.
In addition, when traveling and carrying a cigar, cellophane can effectively maintain the moisture balance in the cigar. Although the effect is not as perfect as a moisturizing box, it is better than directly exposing the cigar to the air.
Moreover, retaining the cellophane on the cigar can prevent the cigar from cross flavoring with other cigars, avoiding the mutual influence of different cigar styles.
2. Prevent direct contact
When carrying out, the cellophane on the cigar can form a barrier function. After all, when you give a friend a cigar, a cigar without cellophane may be covered with fingerprints, and then put the cigar with the fingerprints in your mouth, which is not something that anyone wants.
Secondly, when a cigar accidentally falls, cellophane can increase cushioning to protect the cigar from unnecessary vibrations, as these vibrations may cause the cigar’s coat to crack.
In addition, during the selection process of cigar retail, some cigar customers may pick up the cigar and rub it, or even put it under their nose to smell. At this time, cellophane can at least effectively prevent direct contact between the skin and the cigar, thereby avoiding damage to the cigar and bringing a bad experience to future cigar buyers.
3. Prevent mold and ivory worm egg hatching
For cigars, the biggest harm is the hatching of mold and ivory worm eggs. The hatching of mold or ivory worm eggs can damage the cigar structure from the inside out, ultimately forming obvious insect eyes on the surface of the cigar, and can also infect nearby cigars that have not yet grown any insects.
With cellophane, it can have a blocking effect, thereby preventing the spread of mold or ivory worm eggs from hatching and providing a certain degree of protection.
Disadvantages of cellophane
1. The so-called maintenance of cigars generally refers to more than half a year. Even if the cellophane is good, its breathability is not as good as leaving it open. In order to ensure the temperature and humidity during the cigar storage process, and to check the cigar storage condition at intervals, it is recommended to remove the cellophane when placing the cigar in the moisturizing cabinet.
2. Removing the cellophane helps the cigar mature and is also more aesthetically pleasing. Cigars wearing cellophane will continuously release various substances such as ammonia, tar, and nicotine during long-term storage, which will remain attached to the cellophane and create a bad experience.
If stored in a cigar box, cigars that do not wear cellophane will absorb and exchange precious oils and aromas throughout the entire environment of the cigar box.
